Ending Family Homelessness
As people of faith, we believe that no family -- and certainly no child -- should experience homelessness.
2017 has seen a dramatic drop of 32% in the number of homeless individuals on Hawaii Island.
Family homeless decreased by 46% from 153 families in 2016 to 83 families in 2017. Of those 83 homeless families, only 42 were unsheltered. While a single unsheltered homeless family is one family too many, the data shows us we are moving in the right direction. If we continue, we will end Family Homelessness in Hawaii County in the near future.
There are a lot of reasons for the decline in family homelessness. However, a significant reason for the decrease is that we as a community, and as people of faith, have decided that Family Homelessness is unacceptable.
Ending Family Homelessness is possible. There are well over 200 Churches and Faith communities on Hawaii Island. Simple math tells us that we can find a way to house 42 families.
